Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME universal top-level extension is the only one planned for personal sites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other designations people are famous by. Initially, only third-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to secure john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought third-level domains remained active.
